GRAIL Mission:  Journey to the Moon: 2012

Two satellites that make up the NASA mission called Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory or GRAIL, were launched on their journey to the Moon on September 10, 2011.  The mission objective will be to determine the structure of the lunar interior, from crust to core.  They are now orbiting the Moon approaching the surface as close as 10 miles.  NASA’s great interest in science education motivated the GRAIL mission to include cameras which can be used by middle schools students to image lunar craters, mountains, and interiors of mare.  The imaging opportunity began March 12 and will last only 80 days.  Students will essentially have the same view Apollo astronauts had as they orbited the Moon.  “Imagine yourself orbiting the Moon getting as close as 10 miles from the lunar surface, spotting an interesting looking crater, and then snapping a photo” reports Dr. Castelaz, PARI Science Director, “It’s as though you are there almost touching the Moon’s surface.”  PARI can request up to 45 images using the GRAIL cameras and wants to share this opportunity with the public, especially middle school students who the cameras are designed for.   At this Evening at PARI, we will discuss the GRAIL mission, demonstrate how to request an image of a feature on the Moon from the GRAIL spacecraft, and give interested participants access to request their own images.
