HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN APPLY FOR PARI’S SPACE SCIENCE LAB

(May 21, 2008) – The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is now accepting applications from high school students in Western North Carolina for the Space Science Lab (SSL). Thirty SSL scholarships are funded by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and provide full tuition and board for a one week period of study on the PARI campus this summer, as well as continuing educational benefits during the school year and a $150 stipend per student.

“The Space Science Lab is an excellent opportunity for students to develop skills in electronics, computer sciences, astronomy, physics and earth sciences,” said Dr. Michael Castelaz, PARI’s director of astronomical studies and education.  “Each student will live on the PARI campus for a week this summer studying the Sun and participating in observations at radio and optical wavelengths.  During the week each student will build his or her own radio telescope and use it for continuing research at home or for school projects.  Students do not need special skills or knowledge beyond the normal high school curriculum; we teach them what they need to know.”

Interested students can obtain complete information about the Space Science Lab at the PARI web site, www.pari.edu/programs/students/ssl, or contact Dr. Castelaz via email at mcastelaz@pari.edu.   The application deadline is June 15.

About PARI
The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit foundation established in 1998.  Located in the Pisgah Forest 30 miles southwest of Asheville, NC, the PARI campus is a dark sky location for astronomy and was selected in 1962 by NASA as the site for one of the first U.S. satellite tracking facilities.  Today, the 200 acre campus houses radio and optical telescopes, earth science instruments, 30 buildings, a fulltime staff and all the infrastructure necessary to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and research.  PARI offers educational programs at all levels, from K-12 through post-graduate research.  The institute is a member of the NC Grassroots Museum Collaborative, a partner in NC OPT-ED and is affiliated with the 16-campus University of North Carolina system through PARSEC, a UNC Center hosted at PARI.  For more information about PARI and its programs, visit www.pari.edu.
