SciGirls
PARI SciGirls programs target girls ages 9-14 and are designed to change how girls think about science by engaging them with fun, hands-on projects. Monthly programs on a variety of topics are scheduled on varying Tuesdays during the school year at PARI or at the 4H Office in the Community Services Building in downtown Brevard, NC.
Each month’s program will lead young girls to try a different facet of science and bring real connections to that field for their pursuit beyond the monthly program. Local, statewide, national and international opportunities to explore science will be shared. Connections to a national PBS website celebrating girls’ explorations in science will also be emphasized each month.
Find out about PARI’s upcoming SciGirls programs and link to the national network of SciGirls here.
Program registration is requested and a fee of $10 is required. This fee is non-refundable. Confirmation of payment of the fee holds the girl’s spot in our program. The registration form will take you to PayPal. (You will need to close your browser window to register multiple participants.)
PARI requires that an adult accompany all children while on PARI’s campus. Please plan to enjoy the program with this in mind.
Register now by clicking on an event date in the list below. Contact PARI at (828) 862-5554 or email Christi Whitworth at cwhitworth@nullpari.edu.

Friday, Jan 12, 2018 - Time: 5:30pm - 9:00pm

The public is invited to a special presentation Friday, January 12th at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) concerning the winter night sky and celestial objects visible in Western North Carolina.
The program is part of PARI’s monthly Evening at PARI series and will feature presentations by PARI astronomers. The observing session will feature the constellations Pegasus, Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, and Perseus. “The clear, cool nights of the winter season are a wonderful time to observe the night sky,” said PARI Director of Learning Experiences Christi Whitworth. “During this special Evening at PARI, we will explore the nighttime skies, share constellation stories and provide observing tips. This program is designed for all ages and knowledge levels, so we encourage family participation.”
The program starts with an optional dinner served from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at PARI’s new restaurant, Smiley’s, followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m. in PARI’s Multimedia Room, and concluding with a campus tour and a trip to the Exhibit Gallery. Reservations are required and will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. the day of the event. The cost is $20 per adult ($35 including dinner), $15 for seniors/military ($30 including dinner), $5 per child ages 6-10 ($13 including dinner). Children 5 and under are admitted free (dinner is free). Register and pay using the PARI Event Calendar at www.pari.edu or call (828) 862-5554. For additional information contact Chelena Blythe at cblythe@nullpari.edu.

Marvel at the views through an array of optical telescopes, including our 25″ Dobsonian, and see what a DARK sky actually looks like. Take a Sky Trek with us as we explore each of the visible planets. Visit a few of the Wonders of our Milky Way before we journey to one of our neighboring galaxies. This event is designed for all ages, so bring the entire family.”
The summer skies will showcase Jupiter and Saturn. Up to five of Jupiter's moons are often visible along with the characteristic bands. Saturn's rings are always a sight to behold. Several globular and open clusters, binary star systems, and other fascinating objects are also on the observing menu depending on sky conditions. On evenings when the Moon is out, you will be able to observe its craters while holding 3D models of them.
Reservations are required and will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. the day of the event. Gates will open one hour before the start of the event, and close one hour after the start of the event.

Please join us on Friday, March 9th, as we welcome Lieutenant Colonel William David Clarke III, USAF (retired) to our campus. Lieutenant Colonel Clarke’s presentation will cover his amazing 13-day adventure in June 1966 across the Pacific to Saigon in a 35 year-old twin engine Gooney Bird aircraft (one of 53 Puff the Magic Dragon gunships deployed to support efforts in the Vietnam War). Prior to the presentation, we invite our guests to enjoy a relaxing dinner from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at PARI’s new restaurant, Smiley’s. At the conclusion of the presentation, guests will enjoy a campus tour and trip to PARI’s exhibit galleries. Weather permitting, the evening will conclude with a trip to our Sky Deck, where PARI astronomers and volunteers will point out the constellations and use PARI’s telescopes to view the night sky.
“We are extremely excited to have Lieutenant Colonel Clarke as our special guest for the evening.” said PARI Director of Learning Experiences Christi Whitworth. “This is certain to be one of our most entertaining Evening at PARI programs, so we encourage everyone in the family to attend.”
