PARI will be Closed for the 4th of July

PARI Hosted Duke TIP for the Sixth Straight Year

Twenty nine high school students from across the country left PARI on Saturday, June 28th, after completing their two week Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). The TIP program at PARI is entitled, "Above and Beyond: Astronomy, Physics & Astrobiology." This is the sixth year that PARI has hosted this summer program and it was the largest and most exciting to date. Click PHOTOS to see pictures of the Duke TIP program at PARI.

July Evening at PARI to Feature Public Tour of APDA

The Friday July 11th Evening at PARI program will feature a presentation by Dr. Michael Castelaz about PARI's Astronomical Photographic Data Archive (APDA). It will also include a guided tour of APDA by Director Thurburn Barker.  Click NEWS RELEASE to read more about the plans for the Evening. Major Engineering Projects Underway at PARI Last Week

Last week very busy at PARI with several major engineering projects underway. Duke TIP students were able to observe work being done on the NASA/STSci donated MicroD scanners, the feeds for the planned interferometer, the 26 Meter antenna upgrades and other projects as PARI prepares to engage in exciting new research projects. PARI Participates in Grassroots Day in the Legislature

PARI was represented at the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative Day in the Legislature on June 11, 2008 by Don Cline, Dave Clavier, John Avant and Tracey Campbell. State Senator John Snow and Representative Trudi Walend along with legislators from around the state stopped by the PARI table and many attended the evening reception. BRCC/Transylvania County Schools Career Academy Visits PARI

For the second year, the Career Academy, sponsored by Blueridge Community College and Transylvania County Public Schools visited PARI. Twenty three middle school, high school and community college teachers met with PARI President Don Cline, Vice President Dave Clavier and Director of Astronomical Studies and Education Michael Castelaz. PARI Represented at the 212th AAS Meeting

Don and Jo Cline, along with Science Educator Christi Whitworth, participated in the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo the first week in June. Don presented a poster throughout the four-day poster session on PARI's Astronomical Photographic Data Archive. Christi led an ASP workshop with colleagues from the Space Science Lab - Berkely. PARI Receives Another Donation from Harvard Smithsonian CfA

During the last week in May, PARI President Don Cline and Site Engineer Ben Goldsmith traveled to Cambridge, MA to pick up cryogenic cooling equipment being donated to PARI by the Harvard Smithsonian Astrophysics. While at Cambridge they visited with many of our friends to discuss the progress of our Astronomical Photographic Data Archive (APDA) and to explore possibility of an additional donation of astronomy books and journals. PARI President Don Cline Named CHAMPION OF SCIENCE

PARI President Don Cline attended the April 19th banquet of the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center where he was honored as a Champion of Science. In presenting the award to Don the NCSMTEC said that the "committee was impressed by your deep personal commitment not only to save the Rosman Research facility but to create opportunities for hands-on science research." Several PARI staff and friends attended the banquet in Cary, NC honoring Don including: Jo Cline, Michael and Liz Castelaz, Christi Whitworth and John and Marti Avant.

Weekly Tours of PARI Continue in 2008

Tours continue every Wednesday at PARI at 2:00 pm. The tours are being led by trained docents who give visitors a behind-the-scene look at PARI. Visitors are able to spend time observing the exciting education and research programs at PARI. Click TOURS for more information about how to sign up for a Wednesday afternoon tour. PARI Receives Equipment from NASA and STSci

PARI President Don Cline, Vice President Dave Clavier and Site Engineer Ben Goldsmith were in Baltimore the first week in April picking up a very exciting equipment donation from NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSci). They were assisted by the president of IPD Tech Larry Avril. NASA and STSci donated two historic and valuable instruments that will support our Astronomical Photographic Data Archive (APDA). The microdensitometers were used to scan the plates of the night sky used to plan the Hubble Telescope project. At PARI these instruments will be used to scan APDA plates and film. Click PHOTOS to see pictures of theses research instruments and the move.
