May Evening at PARI Lecture
The Solar System's Tenth Planet
|
| The solar system's outer reaches have been of interest to astronomers since Pluto
was discovered. A tenth planet was thought to exist that might explain
gravitational effects on Neptune's orbit, and even cyclical extinctions
of species on Earth. This outer region - the Kuiper belt - was speculated to
be the source of short-period comets, and recently major projects have been undertaken
to discover bodies in the outermost reaches of the solar system.
I will describe some of the larger bodies in the outer solar system,
including Sedna and a newly discovered object that is larger than
Pluto - a tenth planet.
