May Evening at PARI Lecture

Lecture 20 May 19, 2006

Lecture by Dr. Mel Blake, PARI

The Solar System's Tenth Planet
The solar system's outer reaches have been of interest to astronomers since Pluto was discovered. A tenth planet was thought to exist that might explain gravitational effects on Neptune's orbit, and even cyclical extinctions of species on Earth. This outer region - the Kuiper belt - was speculated to be the source of short-period comets, and recently major projects have been undertaken to discover bodies in the outermost reaches of the solar system. I will describe some of the larger bodies in the outer solar system, including Sedna and a newly discovered object that is larger than Pluto - a tenth planet.
