Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute is once again providing a unique educational opportunity for the public to receive science instruction from its working astronomers and engineers at PARI.  Registration to Space Science Lab at PARI is limited to 20 participants per day and is on a first-come-first-serve basis.  This Space Science Lab is designed for participants of all ages. Workshop activities and times vary per day; see the description of each camp for schedules, activities, and age recommendations.

A pre-payment of $50 per participant per day for the registration fee is required in order to be registered. Additional cost for equipment may be included and is specified on the attached workshop description.  There is no charge for parents/chaperones supervising children under 15. Registration fees are non-refundable. Please provide any meals or snacks necessary for your family.  Once your registration and payment deposit have been received, your participation will be confirmed.

Model Rocket Day, Friday, August 3, 10:00am-2:30pm

Design and make an Estes model rocket to achieve maximum air time. Launching method will be Estes solid fuel engines (supplies will be provided for two launches per person). Then design a plastic bottle rocket propelled by air pressure and water, complete with parachute. Students will learn basic laws of mechanics, aerodynamics, and rocket science. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children.

Suggested age: all ages, total program cost: $75 plus bring one plastic soda (carbonated) bottle, any size, no water bottles

PVC Refracting Telescope - Build Your Own, Friday, August 17, 12:30pm-5:30pm

Assemble your own refracting telescope using PVC pipe and Meade optical lenses.  Students will learn basic optics and observing techniques.

Suggested age: 12+, total program cost: $200

Night Sky Program, Friday, August 17, 7:30pm-11:00pm

Participants will learn about constellations, related ancient stories, and exciting facts about various stars in StarLab (our onsite inflatable planetarium). Following the planetarium show (weather permitting) participants are encouraged to stay to observe the night sky at PARI, putting the recently acquired knowledge to the test. Telescopes will be available for use.
