Workshop Overview




The SGRA workshops concentrate on learning a package of six astronomy/physics/math related labs which use the Smiley 4.6-m radio telescope remotely through the Internet in the classroom. Teachers are resident at PARI and are provided a comfortable room and board during the workshop.

  • Cost: The cost for participating in a Smiley workshop is $350 per person with a minimum of 10 people. For this fee, the participants will receive: One-day of SGRA training and certification to remotely operate Smiley, lesson plans, one night accomodation at PARI, meals and snacks while on campus and 10 hours of remote use of Smiley during the next year. In the past these costs have been partially undwritten by organizations including Progress Energy, the Space Telescope Science Institute and the American Institute of Physics.   • Workshops for the SGRA take place on a Saturday at various times of the year. Teachers arrive at PARI either Friday or Saturday and get one night accomodation at PARI. Workshops include in introduction to coordinate systems, the electromagnetic spectrum, and radio astronomy. Folowing these is intruction on the use of the Smiley telescope and hands-on introduction to several labs that can be done with students.
