Operation Nebula


Experience a simulated space mission in this 2 or 3 week space camp focused on STEM principles, teamwork and leadership skills. Operation Nebula is a great precursor to our signature camp, Above and Beyond, and is appropriate for all middle school and high school students.

Camp Description

  • Campers will embark on an exciting, immersive journey in space amidst our historic campus and world-class equipment, which played a critical role in the race to space.
  • Astronauts will explore a mission to Mars or a voyage to a mystery exoplanet while working in teams to research the different. technologies and responsibilities required to perform a successful operation.
  • Operation Nebula is a great precursor to our more academically-intensive signature space camp, Above and Beyond and is suitable for all.
  • PARI’s emphasis on community and teamwork enables campers to establish friendships that last a lifetime.
  • Campers will participate in fun and engaging recreational activities built to encourage social comradery and confidence while exploring the spectacular Pisgah Forest and Blue Ridge Mountain region.
  • Some activities may include celestial viewing, hiking, fly-fishing, swimming, tubing and rafting, waterfall exploration, introduction to rock climbing & rappelling, competitive scavenger hunts, entertainment by local musicians and artists…and much more!

Academic Curriculum

  • Learn all critical components of a space mission.
  • Explore factors ranging from science objectives to the physical requirements of a spacecraft to human health and safety, as well as the political and social implications of long-term missions.
  • Form teams to be responsible for one facet of a complex mission and coordinate with other teams to ensure that all teams are working to form a cohesive, successful plan.
  • Present findings and recommendations while advocating for your team’s plans to the larger group.
  • Get hands-on experience with the tools that researchers use to study space.
  • Participate in exploring the night sky through the use of ‘research capable’ optical telescopes.
