Whether you are a researcher, a business professional or a student with an amazing idea—or maybe you don’t have your big idea yet—PARI is happy to help guide your project with the equipment, training, data and facility you need to make your next great discovery.
PARI can host your instrument, experiment, or data at our facility. Hosting may include power, internet connectivity, and maintenance of your equipment. Our highly trained staff will work with you to understand your goals and facilitate implementation and execution, as well as provide any additional needs you may have.
We provide training and access to the instruments and data archives currently housed and available for use at PARI, including our radio telescopes, APDA, SCOPE, and a variety of other space and earth science instruments used by researchers.
PARI offers rewarding summer opportunities for college undergraduates and graduate students to conduct research projects on-site while also serving as part of our summer staff.
We train volunteers to work with our instruments and data archives so they are able provide learning experiences for our visitors and learners. Volunteers are also able to conduct their own work using the facility and equipment.
If you have found something you think might be a meteorite, here is what PARI can and cannot do.
Specimen Examination Services
This is a paid service available with an appointment. PARI will do the following:
These tests can typically be completed in less than an hour but can take longer. The cost for this service is $100 for the first full or partial hour, and $50 for each subsequent full or partial hour. You must stay with your specimen at all times. We will not conduct any tests or examinations without you present. The tests may be recorded. PARI may request photos of the specimen before scheduling an appointment.
The results of these tests cannot verify with 100% certainty that an object is a meteorite but can give a very high confidence if the results of each test are favorable.
These tests can also be completed yourself without the need of any specialized equipment. Websites such as https://sites.wustl.edu/meteoritesite/ provide detailed guides for what to do and look for.
If your intent is to gift, donate, or loan your specimen to PARI after examination, the examination fee may be waived with director approval.
Specimen Referrals
If PARI has examined your specimen, per the description above in Specimen Examination Services, and we have a strong confidence that it is a meteorite, we may be able to refer you to a lab that can offer additional services. We will not make referrals without performing an examination. We cannot guarantee that a lab will be willing to examine your specimen, as some receive many more requests than they can service.
A lab may have the ability to do some or all of the following:
The costs of these services may vary and will be between you and the lab performing them.
What we cannot do
PARI cannot conduct an appraisal of your specimen or offer any estimate of its value.
PARI cannot purchase your specimen.
PARI cannot provide you with any kind of certificate, guarantee, or proof that your specimen is a meteorite.
An appointment is required for all visits. Contact info@pari.edu, view our Calendar, or see the Visit section of this site to learn more.
