Recreational Activities

Our home is the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Pisgah National Forest, and the Land of Waterfalls

Field trips and outdoor adventures take advantage of this unique landscape.

Field trips and excursions vary by camp but often include:

Hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Pisgah National Forest to take in amazing views.
Visits to dramatic cascades in The Land of Waterfalls and swimming nearby within view.

Fishing with our friends at Lake Toxaway.

Tubing adventures down the river with the fantastic guides at Headwaters Outfitters.

Trips for ice cream, bowling, and other area treats.

Camps include hands-on challenges, competitions, and events, like:

  • Night observing of planets, stars, galaxies, and more, using PARI’s large optical telescopes
  • Scavenger hunts, outdoor games, and other team activities
  • Recreation room with air hockey, ping pong, pool table, foosball, board games, and puzzles
  • Trivia night, game night, dance night, talent show, ice cream social, celebrations of astronomical events
  • Competitions in rocketry, dropping landing craft, robot races
  • Camp fires, marshmallow toasting, s’more making, glow sticks and sparklers

Our exciting recreational activities encourage campers to build community, discover new interests and develop resilience and independence outside of the classroom. Campers will participate alongside their research teams, roommates and house teams, offering many opportunities to make connections and form friendships that last a lifetime.
